We finally go to go out door to door canvassing on Saturday. We had a group of six and paired off in twos. Ultimately, this was viewed as a test run to see how feasible of a fund raised this could be in the future . We all covered one street (30-40 homes).
The biggest problem proved to be finding people who were home and/or willing to answer their door for people with clipboards. Between the three groups we agreed that about 1 out of 7 doors was answered. The second biggest problem was getting money from those kind enough to answer their doors. As far as fundraisers go it was a near bust.
That being said, a lot of good did come out of our outing. While people were reluctant to open their wallets, they were more than willing to ask questions and take time to learn about what exactly our campaign is doing. Nearly everyone who took time to listen was interested, listened to what we’re about, and received literature and closed their doors more informed. We even picked up 2 new volunteers in the process.
Ultimatley, Jake, our canvass “expert” had some ideas and explinations at the end of the day. Before we go next time I am going to have peolpe do some practicing and get a bit more informed about the issue from me.
I think one of the reasons this is such a tough issue to canvass for is it’s complexity. It’s not as easy as fundraising for a homeless shelter, day care, or cancer foundation because it requires a lot of questions and a lot of explanation. We will be going again, in time. Jake and I will probably go try some things out in the next two weeks. As always, I’ll keep you posted.
